1. Thomas Edison is the reason that the film industry is in California. Thomas Edison is someone who held a huge monopoly in patents; often taking many of the patents of his workers (and he had like a thousand) etc. He was interested in the film business and due to the fact that he held a wide range of patents in motion pictures he became the head of a company called Motion Picture Patent Company. Anytime people used a projector or camera without paying up, Edison via the MPPC would go to court etc.
Now he was in New Jersey, so California on the other side is hard for him to go to (since back then cross continental trips were costly) and California had a diverse scenery and also courts there didn't like Edison as much. So Hollywood essentially came from the fact that people were trying to get away from Edison's monopoly in motion pictures. [credits to mental floss]
